Many, many years ago . . . back when I was a really young pastor in my early 20’s, I was asked by one of our elders what my favorite book of the New Testament was. I quickly responded that Romans was my favorite book . . .
Fast forward a few years and . . . well, quite a few years, actually, and while I might not say the Apostle Paul’s epistle to the Christians in Rome is still my favorite, it’s right up there with all of my favorites! Romans is not a gentle book, or easy to read, or simple to understand. Paul is dealing with some deep and intricate issues that are far from simple and far from politically correct.
And if you think Romans is intricate, well, we’re starting the month off with one of the deepest and most intricate books of the New Testament. The authorship of Hebrews is debatable, and not at all agreed on, but I tend to lean toward Paul as the author. But never mind which of the early brothers set themselves to write this stuff down, it’s wonderful and thought provoking, and will leave you scratching your head and pondering a bit deeper than you wanted to go.
And what’s my purpose? We’re moving into April – Easter month this year – and these books deal intricately with the redeeming work Jesus did in His death and resurrection, and I want to start setting up for Easter now. So, pour a cup a java, plop yerself into a comfortable chair, with some appropriate minutes blocked out from distracting interruptions, and see where the Holy Spirit will take you. I’m not sure where these chapters are gonna take me, but I’m looking forward to the journey. Thanks, once again, for joining me.
Shalom, DP
